ASTON, Pa. – The Cabrini volleyball team will begin its defense of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) hardware as the league’s preseason favorite, as determined by a vote conducted by the head coaches. In 2009, the Cavaliers claimed the CSAC crown and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
“We are honored to be selected the preseason favorite in such a competitive league as the Colonial States Athletic Conference,” said head coach Eric Schaefer. “We are looking forward to the 2010 season.”
The reigning CSAC Player of the Year Stephanie Recklau is back in the middle for the Cavaliers. Recklau powered the Blue & White last season with 256 kills and 100 total blocks en route to conference first-team recognition.
Junior Courtney Abel led Cabrini in 2009 with 458 digs. Junior outside hitter Alexis Doss paired 240 digs with 200 kills. Sophomore Megan Ryan (184 kills, 176 digs) also returns for the Blue & White in 2010.
Schaefer begins his fourth season with the Cavaliers boasting a 65-29 career mark. He was named the CSAC Coach of the Year last season.
Cabrini recorded 141 points and 10 of the possible 12 first-place votes. Other first-place votes went to Philadelphia Biblical University (119) and Gwynedd-Mercy College (68). Neumann University finished second in the poll with 121 points.
Cabrini opens the 2010 campaign on Wednesday, Sept. 1 on the road versus backyard-rival Eastern University. Match time with the Eagles is set for 7 p.m.
