ASTON, Pa. – The defending Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) champion Cabrini women’s soccer team has been voted to finish second in a preseason vote conducted by the conference’s head coaches, the league announced Tuesday. The Cavaliers earned 108 points and four of the possible 11 first-place votes.
Cabrini finished 14-6-1 in 2009 en route to the program’s first CSAC title and NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2003 season. The Blue & White posted an 8-1-1 mark versus conference opponents and claimed the tournament’s No. 2 seed.
Senior forward Annmarie Kolla provided the fireworks in last year’s championship tilt against No. 1 seed Marywood University, finding the back of the net with 5:06 remaining in the first overtime session. Kolla is the team’s top returning scorer from one year ago, recording 24 points with nine goals and six assists.
Junior midfielder Sammy Thompson is also back in the fold for ninth-year head coach Ken Prothero. Thompson ranked third on last year’s team with 17 points on four goals and a team-best nine assists.
Senior midfielder Dana Nardello and junior midfielder Kara Hinkelmon tallied 14 and 11 points, respectively, last season. Freshman Maddy Edwards split time between the pipes and in the field in 2009, posting a 0.61 goals-against average and nine points.
Marywood earned the top spot in the coaches poll, claiming 114 points and five first-place votes. Centenary College finished third with 100 points and the two remaining votes.
Cabrini opens the 2010 campaign at home on Wednesday, Sept. 1 versus Lawrence University. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
