RADNOR, Pa. – Cabrini head golf coach Dr. Tony Verde has resigned following 11 seasons at the helm of the Cavaliers. Verde guided the Blue & White to back-to-back Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) titles and NCAA Championship appearances in 2008 and 2009.
“Tony has been an extraordinary mentor and leader for our golf program over the years and he will be missed,” said Director of Athletics & Recreation Joe Giunta. “Not only has he produced numerous talented golfers during his time as head coach, but each and every young man he dealt with came out a better person.”
Verde coached Cabrini to its first CSAC (formerly PAC - Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) golf championship in program history in 2008. The Cavaliers rallied from a nine-stroke deficit after day one to top Neumann University at Center Valley Country Club.
In 2009, the Cavaliers captured the CSAC crown at Broad Run Golfer’s Club, topping second-place finisher Keystone College by 19 strokes. This season, the Blue & White placed second, finishing two strokes behind champion Keystone College.
Under Verde’s tutelage, senior Chris Lawler claimed the individual crown for an unprecedented third straight year at the CSAC Championship in 2010. Verde is a two-time conference coach of the year, earning the honor in 2005 and 2008.
Before Verde assumed the head coaching responsibilities at Cabrini, the Cavaliers had not finished in the top half of the conference since the 1993 campaign. Verde guided the Blue & White to a third-place finish in 2000, and runner-up performances in 2002, 2005 and 2010.
Before joining the Cavaliers, Verde led the men’s golf team at the University of Toronto for seven seasons (1982-88).
Verde chaired the Exercise Science Department at Cabrini for seven years (1998-05), while also serving as the Executive Director of the Dixon Center. Currently, he is an exercise science and health promotion professor at Cabrini.
