RADNOR, Pa. – Senior attackman Casey Grugan is Cabrini’s all-time leader in career points after totaling eight points on three goals and five assists in a 15-8 victory versus North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opponent Kenyon College Saturday afternoon at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
Grugan’s fifth assist of the contest at the 11:04 mark of the fourth quarter stood for the 257th point of his Cavaliers’ career, surpassing former Cavalier Scott Reimer’s (2006-09) all-time mark of 256 points. Grugan added one more tally on a goal with 6:02 remaining.
Grugan now owns 258 career points on 155 goals and 103 assists. He also extended his consecutive points streak to 62 games, the longest active Division III streak in the country, and his consecutive goals streak to 59 games, an NCAA Division III record.
Additionally, Grugan becomes just the second Cavalier in program history to eclipse the 100-assist plateau for his career, joining Cabrini Athletic Hall of Fame honoree Tom Lemieux (1999-02).
The Cavaliers’ offense boasted 10 players with at least one point against the Lords. Junior attackman Paul Skulski totaled four points on two goals and two assists.
Senior attackman Steve Kapp (3G) and sophomore midfielder Brian Hill (1G, 2A) each recorded three points. Sophomore midfielder Joe Arrell (1G, 1A), freshman midfielder Ryan Sankey (2A) and freshman attackman Bobby Thorp (2G) also chipped in two points.
Hill led the Blue & White with five groundballs. Junior Mike Gurenlian was the Cavaliers’ top performer in the draw circle, winning 9-of-14 face-offs.
Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki started between the pipes for Cabrini for the straight game. Zarzecki notched six saves in just under 49 minutes played. Sophomore cageminder Steve Farrell logged 11 minutes and posted five stops.
The Cavaliers raced to a 10-0 advantage with just over three minutes remaining the second quarter behind five points from Grugan and three goals from Kapp. Skulski contributed two scores during the run.
Kenyon responded with five of the game’s next eight goals, but never pulled closer than seven tallies. With 3:26 remaining in the fourth quarter, senior midfielder Paul Levine notched his first goal of the season off a feed from Skulski.
Rookie attackman Mackie Avis led the Lords’ offense with four points on one goal and three assists. Senior midfielder Dominique McKoy and freshman midfielder Chris Pappalardo each netted two goals.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Szczepanski started in goal for Kenyon, but lasted just six minutes after surrending four quick goals in the first quarter. Sophomore goalkeeper Austin Anusbigian came on in relief and played the duration of the contest, registering 12 saves.
Today’s game marked the first meeting between Cabrini and Kenyon on the men’s lacrosse field since the 1998 season.
The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 2-0 at home in 2010. The Blue & White is 29-4 at Edith Robb Dixon Field since the 2007 season.
Cabrini (3-2) remains at home for a date with No. 1 Gettysburg College Wednesday, March 17. Game time against the Bullets is set for 3:30 p.m.
