View 2010 men's lacrosse schedule
RIDLEY, Pa. – The Cabrini men’s lacrosse game at Widener University, scheduled for Saturday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m., will be part of the first annual HEADstrong Rivalry Games sponsored by the HEADstrong Foundation. The HEADstrong Foundation is a charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for blood cancer research.
The match-up features two of the Philadelphia area's top Division III programs. The Cavaliers have won nine straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) crowns and appeared in eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments. The Pride has captured four of the last five Middle Atlantic Conference titles.
Cabrini earned a 15-11 win against Widener last season. Attackman Casey Grugan led the Cavaliers’ charge with five points on two goals and three assists in the win. Goalkeeper Kevin Chenoweth played all 60 minutes in between the pipes for the Blue & White, notching 14 saves.
Grugan, named a preseason second-team All-American by Inside Lacrosse, set Cabrini single-season records in 2009 for points (96) and assists (44). He has scored at least one goal in 54 straight games, tying a 33-year-old Division III record owned by Washington College’s John Cheek in 1977.
The Cavaliers and Pride meeting will headline a six-game schedule that includes five high school contests. The high school slate is as follows – two-time defending state champion La Salle vs. St. Joseph's Prep (Catholic League), District 11 champion Emmaus vs. Easton (Lehigh Valley League), Pennsbury vs. Neshaminy (Suburban One National Conference), Unionville vs. Sun Valley (Ches-Mont League) and Ridley vs. Strath Haven (Central League). Times will be released later.
The rivalry games are just part of the family of events run by the HEADstrong foundation, which raises money/awareness for blood cancer research, as well as help those afflicted by the disease.
The HEADstrong Foundation was created in memory of Nick "Head" Colleluori, who was a 2004 graduate of Ridley High School and a Hofstra University men’s lacrosse student-athlete when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Nick lost his relentless battle to cancer on November 28, 2006 after a 14-month fight.
