GIBSONIA, Pa. - The Presidents’ Council of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference has approved the addition of Cabrini College as an affiliate member in men’s and women’s swimming and diving, effective with the 2010-11 season. Cabrini will join Penn State Behrend, Penn State Altoona and Pitt-Bradford, the AMCC’s three full member institutions which will sponsor the sport next year.
“Cabrini College is very excited to become a member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference for men’s and women’s swimming,” said Cabrini Director of Athletics and Recreation Joe Giunta. “It is an honor to join Penn State Behrend, Penn State Altoona, and Pitt – Bradford and their rich swimming traditions. Most importantly, we are elated for our men’s and women’s student-athletes who will now be able to experience the benefits of competing within an intercollegiate conference.”
Swimming and diving are the newest championships offered by the AMCC, established in 2006-07. The conference requires four member institutions to sponsor a sport in order to conduct a championship. An affiliate member opening was created when Frostburg State University announced that it would be leaving the AMCC to join the Capital Athletic Conference in 2010-11. Cabrini is a full member of the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
“This is a great day for Cabrini swimming,” said Cavaliers’ head coach Mike Kernicky. “We’ve added some great meets over the last few seasons, but a conference affiliation and end-of-season meet for our swimmers legitimizes the program even more. We are very thankful to all who helped make this happen, including the Cabrini athletic department, Director of Athletics and Recreation Joe Giunta and the leaders of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. We hope to bring an AMCC championship to Cabrini soon.”
AMCC commissioner Donna Ledwin was equally enthusiastic. “It is important to preserve these post-season opportunities for our student-athletes,” she said. “We are pleased that the Cabrini program will be part of our conference tradition in swimming and diving.”
