RADNOR, Pa. -
“Remembering 2008-09” will run in five weekly installments each Monday morning on CabriniAthletics.com, remembering the Top 5 games/matches/meets of the year that was for the Cavaliers. Game #5 – Men’s Lacrosse makes statement at home against nationally-ranked Haverford College

The Black Squirrels arrived at Cabrini billed as the No. 12 ranked team in the country. The Cavaliers, ranked No. 5 at the time, were hosting its local rival on the heels of a 13-10 win against Haverford in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Haverford jumped out to a 1-0 advantage and even held two one-goal leads in the second quarter of that contest. Cabrini held a narrow one-score edge at the intermission. The Cavaliers scored five unanswered goals, taking a commanding 12-7 lead heading into final period.

The Black Squirrels ran off three straight goals, trimming its deficit to two goals, 12-10, mid-way through the fourth. Cabrini added one more tally, held on and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

This season’s meeting would never be so close.

The Blue & White sprinted to an 11-0 advantage less than four minutes into the third period. Haverford didn’t record its first goal until the 9:06 mark. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers owned a commanding 13-1 cushion and posted a convincing 15-3 victory in the much-anticipated rematch.

Junior attackman Casey Grugan powered the Cabrini offense with five points on two goals and three assists. Senior attackman Scott Reimer (3G), junior midfielder Rich Romanelli (3G) and sophomore midfielder Paul Skulski (1G, 2A) each notched three points. The Cavaliers’ offense boasted 10 players with at least one point.

Senior goalkeeper Kevin Chenoweth totaled eight saves for the victory.

Cabrini controlled the game’s tempo at the face-off X, winning 15-of-21 draws. Senior Mike Dolente claimed 8-of-11 face-off attempts, while classmate Kevin Fahey recorded six wins in eight tries.

The win was the Cavaliers 18th all-time in 21 games played at Edith Robb Dixon Field and their fourth in a row against Haverford.
