KING’S POINT, N.Y. – The Cabrini men’s basketball team’s program-record six-game win streak was ended following a 73-61 loss at Landmark Conference opponent U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Tuesday night. Junior forward Dom Farrello scored a season-high 22 points for the Cavaliers in the loss.
Farrello shot 9-for-15 overall and 4-for-6 from the 3-point line. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished two assists. Farrello scored 23 points in the Cavaliers’ 85-82 victory versus USMMA last season.
Freshman point guard Cory Lemons reached double figures with 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting overall. He collected six rebounds and added two assists.
Despite being held scoreless in the first half, senior forward Kevin Misevicius finished with 10 points, five boards and three blocked shots. Freshman combo guard A.J. Williams totaled seven points on 3-for-4 shooting overall.
The Blue & White pulled to within four points in the final two minutes. However, USMMA senior guard Ryan Samuel knocked down 6-of-6 free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the win.
The Cavaliers trailed at halftime for the first time all season, 35-25, after shooting just 36.0 percent from the floor overall. Farrello led the Cabrini offensive attack, scoring 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting. He knocked down both of his 3-point attempts and also grabbed three rebounds.
The Mariners led by as much 13 points in the opening 20 minutes. After sophomore forward Brandon Carter buried two free throws at the 10:30 mark, USMMA kept the Cavaliers scoreless for the ensuing seven minutes until Farrello buried a jump-shot from the foul line with just over three minutes before the intermission.
The Mariners enjoyed a balanced scoring attack in the first half. Samuel tallied a team-best eight points, dropping 2-of-3 3-point tries. Sophomore guard Jon Snead added seven points on 3-for-4 shooting overall. USMMA shot a season-best 56.5 percent from the floor.
Overall, the Cavaliers out-scored the Mariners 22-20 in the paint, 19-15 off turnovers and 19-18 off the bench.
Cabrini (6-1) returns to Nerney Field House Friday, Dec. 18 versus Haverford College. Game time against the Fords is set for 6 p.m.
