RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men’s lacrosse team has named senior attackman Casey Grugan and senior defenseman Anthony Mazza as team captain for the 2010 season, 10th-year head coach Steve Colfer announced today.
Grugan, also a team captain for the 2009 season, begins his senior season ranked second in program history in points (237), goals (141) and assists (96). He was named a Preseason First Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse and voted the Preseason National Player of the Year in a fan poll conducted by Lacrosse Magazine.
Grugan set single-season records for points (96) and assists (44) last season. He has tallied at least one point in 57 consecutive games and scored at least one goal in 54 straight games, matching a 32-year-old NCAA Division III record set by Washington College’s John Cheek in 1977.
Grugan earned USILA All-America Second Team honors in 2009 and third-team recognition in 2008. He has been named the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Player of the Year each of the last two seasons.
Mazza played in all 19 games last season and was one of 11 Cavaliers to receive CSAC First Team distinction. He recorded 23 groundballs and posted 10 caused turnovers.
In 2009, Cabrini claimed its ninth consecutive CSAC title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth straight season. The Cavaliers are unbeaten in 88 straight contests versus conference opponents, including an NCAA record 71 consecutive regular season games.
Cabrini begins the 2010 season Wednesday, February 24 at Edith Robb Dixon Field versus Fairleigh Dickinson University. Face-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
