NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
The Cabrini men’s soccer team concluded its 2009 season Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at No. 7 Christopher Newport University. The Cavaliers suffered a 4-0 loss against the Captains at Captains Field.

Christopher Newport’s offense boasted four different goal scorers against the Cavaliers. The Captains owned a 2-0 advantage at the intermission before depositing two more goals in the second half.

Cabrini came out of the halftime break and paired a number of scoring chances with a critical save from senior goalkeeper Bryan Johnson on a point-blank try for the Captains. The Cavaliers best chance came mid-way through the second half when junior forward Steve Reynolds sailed a shot wide left.

Later in the closing period, Cabrini had another scoring chance thwarted in front of the CNU net. Senior midfielder Evan Hanauer gathered a loose ball, but was denied by goalkeeper Justin Wolfe.

However, Nao Masudo’s goal off a corner kick in the 62nd minute pushed CNU’s advantage to three goals, 3-0. Andrew Bonorden’s goal at the 81:03 mark capped the scoring.

The Blue & White offense generated seven shots for the contest overall. Junior forward King Saah led the Cabrini charge with two shots.

The Cavaliers’ attack also earned seven penalty corners against just two from Christopher Newport.

Johnson notched five saves for the Blue & White in the loss. Wolfe made two stops for the Captains in the win. CNU advances to Sunday night’s second round match versus Game 1’s winner Lynchburg College. The Hornets earned a 3-0 win versus Catholic University.

Saturday’s game marked the final in the careers of Cabrini seniors Mike Giunta, Hanauer, Andrew Jacobs, Johnson, Mike Kroener, Justin McCall, Brian Moran, Jason Moran and Brian Raffle.

The four-year members of this senior class has played a role in 59 overall victories. Over the last two seasons, these seniors helped guide the Cavaliers to two consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championships and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Cabrini finishes the 2009 season with a 16-4-2 overall record.
